Reba McEntire got honest about the pressures of beauty standards

During an April 2024 interview with E!, the 69-year-old revealed that, like many of us, she was a victim of comparison growing up. "I was pale, [had] lots of freckles and frizzy hair," McEntire recalled. "And my girlfriends had long, black, straight, beautiful round curls. Another girlfriend could tan easily, so I'd lay out with her, and she would get brown as a biscuit—and I'd be blistered."

With time, McEntire learned the pitfalls of this comparison thinking. McEntire then refused to be disheartened by her differences, instead claiming them as tokens of pride. "I finally figured it out: I'm not supposed to be like them — I'm just me," McEntire explained. "It took me a long time to accept that and realize that it set me free."

Unshackled by those social pressures, McEntire has been able to flex her style however she likes while maintaining a delightfully down-to-earth mindset and career. Whether it's a late 1990s pixie cut or a teased-out head of curls, a glimmering jumpsuit for the Opry or a striking blazer for The Voice red chair, McEntire has never feared a bold look, exuding effortless confidence in everything she does.

"I don't like trends," McEntire explained. "The younger generation, they're more confident than I was at their age, and I'm so happy for them. It takes guts, it takes stamina, and it takes courage to be comfortable in your own skin."

McEntire is also happy to report that her confidence is timeless. "I'm very proud of how old I am or how young I am," McEntire said. "Real beauty means that you're comfortable in your own skin. And if you're confident and comfortable, you're gonna feel beautiful."
