Why Angie Rey’s “Explosive,” “Magnetic” Voice Was the Battles’ “Biggest Surprise”
Angie Rey is one to watch on The Voice!
It was a night of surprises for Kelsea Ballerini's team on The Voice, as Nashville singer Angie Rey showed so much power and promise during the Battles.
Angie Rey's The Voice Battle
For their Battle, Rey was paired with Artist Tatum Scott. Because both Artists covered songs about heartbreak at their Blind Auditions, Ballerini assigned them a more empowering tune this time around. "I wanted to hear the other side of heartbreak," she explained. "Girl" is about comparison, and picking yourself up when you're down.
“To sing this song is so powerful, because I have felt like this girl," said Rey, revealing that she used to bleach her brown hair blonde and criticize herself and her appearance.
“Angie, there is an explosive quality. You have so much power and electricity in your voice,” said Adam Levine after the Battle ended. “Angie, I will tell you, you are the biggest surprise on my team. I was blown away," added Ballerini, who crowned her the winner. Rey had been (understandably) nervous during her Blind Audition, leading to a couple wobbly notes, but during this round, she had total control.
“I just wanna call my mom!” said Rey about the good news.

“Angie’s voice, I hear a little country in there, I hear pop and soul...she's full of surprises,” said Ballerini afterward. But that wasn't the last surprise of the day. As Tatum Scott exited the stage, John Legend spontaneously slapped his button to steal her, and Rey couldn't have been happier that her friend was staying on the show. "Wait! Can I go give her a hug? Can I go?" she screamed from backstage.
Calling herself "a huge Kelsea fan" during the Blind Auditions, Rey explained, "I would love a career like Kelsea’s. She writes from the point in her life that she’s at, but it really does transcend so many generations of people. Her songs have gotten me through so much. If someone blocks Kelsea Ballerini, I might throw hands."
"I am terrified of singing a Kelsea Ballerini song in front of Kelsea Ballerini," Rey added before singing Ballerini's hit "Penthouse" for her Blind Audition. (Which, of course, she nailed!)

"You hit notes that I don’t hit in that song," Ballerini said afterward. The two then sang a little together, making Rey's dream come true.
