Shane Gillis Played the Office Weirdo to a Tee in SNL's "HR Meeting" Sketch
It was a standout sketch from March 1, 2025 Saturday Night Live Host's Season 49 debut.
On March 1, Shane Gillis hosts Saturday Night Live for the second time — and his return after just one year inspired us to revisit a standout sketch from his debut in Season 49: "HR Meeting."
Co-starring most of the Season 49 cast, the February 24, 2024 sketch found Gillis playing a man trying to creatively work around his company's rules about workplace relationships. A pair of HR reps (Bowen Yang and Chloe Fineman) unsuccessfully try to wrangle his questions.
As Gillis's character repeatedly tries to assert a nonexistent policy about "banking" a one coworkers' acceptance of a date to use later with another colleague, we meet another office weirdo (Kenan Thompson). And a final summary of the meeting from the coworkers themselves proves the HR duo was never going to get through to them.
"Wait, can I say something? I learned something important today," Gillis's character tells them. "An office is a sacred place, and office relationships are tough. But you can only ask someone out once. If they say no, that's it."
"That's literally the only thing we've covered today," Fineman's HR rep tells him.
"Here's something you didn't cover: You can bank yeses, and they roll over every year," he insists.
"And over time, they accrue interest," adds another worker (Heidi Gardner), rising to her feet.

"And you can trade in your Christmas bonus for 20 new asks," Season 49 cast member Chloe Troast adds, inspiring piano music building in the background.
"And booty khakis are okay!" an employee in tight cut-offs (Marcello Hernández) adds, turning around to showcase the look. Watch "HR Meeting" above, and stream all 50 seasons of Saturday Night Live on Peacock anytime.
Shane Gillis bookends a busy year hosting SNL again on March 1
Since making his SNL debut, Gillis was part of the cast in the Netflix original comedy series, Tires — which got picked up for a second season — and embarked on a sold-out arena tour. He began 2025 with his biggest tour yet, “Shane Gillis Live,” which kicked off in San Antonio, TX on January 10. Gillis will take his live comedy show around the U.S. through the spring, ending in San Jose, CA on June 28.

Earlier this year, the comedian also starred in a Bud Light Super Bowl commercial, where he threw a wild cul-de-sac soirée — with the help of Post Malone and Peyton Manning.
“It’s amazing being in a Super Bowl ad with Bud Light for the fourth time, which is crazy. [That’s] way more than Shane will ever do," Malone joked in an interview with Billboard about the spot.
