SNL's "CouplaBeers" Ad Parody Feels Like a Sequel to Will Ferrell's "A.M. Ale" Sketch

Shane Gillis stars in Saturday Night Live's latest in a long line of hilarious fake beer commercials.

By Samantha Vincenty

Host Shane Gillis's second outing as a Saturday Night Live Host on March 1 included a new commercial parody for a new medication called "CouplaBeers." The healing elixir is exactly what it sounds like: It's two brews.

How to Watch

Watch Saturday Night Live Saturdays at 11:30/10:30c on NBC and Peacock, streaming next day on Peacock.

"You wouldn't know it, but a few months ago, anxiety and depression were ruining my life," Gillis's character tells the camera at the top of the ad. "I was struggling at work. I was struggling as a father, and struggling as a husband," he adds, over footage that proves it. "I was at a real low point. That's when I talked to my doctor about a CouplaBeers."

"CouplaBeers is a clinically proven treatment for conditions like boredom, depression, winter, museum, hangovers, affair, and moderate-to severe-Italian Wife," Gillis narrates.

"CouplaBeers" has definite side effects in Shane Gillis's SNL ad parody

While a dose of CouplaBeers "quickly turns a cloudy, rainy day into a sunny one," it becomes clear by the ad's end that drinking your way through the days is not a sustainable plan.

"And if you miss a dose of CouplaBeers, don't worry: You won't. Brother, you will never miss a dose," he tells the camera. "It's kinda the only thing you really remember after a while, is to take it."

Sure, CouplaBeers might make you drowsy — which is why the ad offers a prescription solution for that, too. Unfortunately, side effects of that medication include arguing with your son's little league umpire, which is why the ad ends with an intervention.

Watch "CouplaBeers" from Season 50, Episode 13, and stream all 50 seasons of Saturday Night Live on Peacock anytime.

SNL's beer commercial parodies include "A.M. Ale" and "Coldcock"

Saturday Night Live's 50-season back catalog has included a fair share of fake beer commercials, ranging from the absurd to a few that mimic the aesthetics of a real-life ad campaign, such as "Budd Light" from 1984. Watch a few of them below.

"A.M. Ale" starring Will Ferrell and Molly Shannon

A.M. Ale

Like many of the coffee and cereal ads of its era, the "A.M. Ale" ad from 1995 leads with an uplifting jingle as various Americans start their day...except in this case, Season 21 cast members like David Koechner and Cheri Oteri are guzzling a cold one.

This 1984 pretape starring Host Robin Williams is pretty much a shot-for-shot parody of Budweiser's real campaigns from that time.

"Coldcock" with Tim Meadows

Another faithful homage to a real campaign: Billy Dee Williams' festive Colt 45 spots from the 1980s.

"Where You're Going: The Upscale Beer for Yuppies"

Where You're Going

This beer commercial is doubly iconic for two reasons: The amount of stars in it (Robert Downey Jr., Anthony Michael Hall, Joan Cusack, Damon Wayans) and its truly unexpected ending.

"Sam Adams"

Bill Burr plays a thirsty, true-blue Bostonian in Season 46 ad parody about pumpkin beer.
