Adam Hits “Jackpot” with 17-Year-Old Trevon Dawson’s Voice That “Cuts Like a Knife”

Coach Adam Levine finally got his cowboy.

By Elizabeth Logan

It all came down to this. For the first 16 seasons of The Voice, Coach Blake Shelton nabbed so many Country Artists that eventually, Coach Adam Levine stopped even turning his Chair for the genre.

How to Watch

Watch The Voice on Mondays and Tuesdays at 8/7c on NBC and next day on Peacock.

Now back for Season 27, Levine once again found himself thwarted, this time by new Coach and Nashville darling, Kelsea Ballerini. But as the final Coach with an unfinished team on the last night of Blind Auditions, and just one spot left, he finally got his cowboy. What a sight to see.

Trevon Dawson's Blind Audition of Bailey Zimmerman's "Religiously" made Adam Levine's The Voice dream come true

Trevon Dawson, 17, is a fan of "red dirt outlaw Country," having grown up in a camper in Cole Camp, Missouri. He took The Voice stage for the Blind Auditions in a cowboy hat to sing "Religiously" by Bailey Zimmerman, not realizing he had an audience of one. Coaches Ballerini, Michael Bublé, and John Legend had already filled their teams, and it was up to Levine to turn, or not.

“You’re gonna get a Country Artist… it’s fate!” Ballerini told Levine as Dawson sang. Levine waited a few moments to turn his Chair around, to the point that Ballerini commanded him, "Go!"

Clearly nervous, Dawson was heaving as he finished, but he got his spot on Team Adam. “I know he's your guy, but I gotta give him a hug,” said Bublé, leaving his chair to greet the young singer. Levine praised Dawson's manners and commitment, while Ballerini congratulated them both on a "jackpot" match.

Reflecting on his past experiences with Shelton, Levine quipped, "We'll talk more about that trauma in a little bit." He added that Dawson's voice "cuts like a knife" and promised, "I'm gonna call my friend Blake Shelton and be like, 'hey stupid… help me.'”

The aftereffects of the Shelton years are real. In an earlier round of Blind Auditions, Levine heard Country singer Braxton Garza's rich, Southern tone, and didn't make a move. "When it came to voices like yours, my heart has been broken so many times," Levine told Garza by way of apology.

But that Artist, actually, went to Team Bublé after the Canadian crooner smartly used his Block to prevent Ballerini from snatching him. That's one Country Artist with Michael, one with Adam, a bunch with Kelsea... and none for Coach John Legend! Well, not until he starts Stealing, that is.
