“Magical” Jay Ammo’s Voice “Floated Through the Room” & Caused a “Nasty” 4-Coach Fight

He had the Coaches ready to throw hands.

By Elizabeth Logan

Going into the final round of Blind Auditions for Season 27 of The Voice, the Coaches were more eager than eager to recruit the best of the best to their teams. And Artist Jay Ammo managed to convince all four that he had the right stuff.

How to Watch

Watch The Voice on Mondays and Tuesdays at 8/7c on NBC and next day on Peacock.

Ammo, who is from Guyana and recently completed a tour of duty in Afghanistan, sang "The A Team" by Ed Sheeran for his Blind Audition, with a tone that was soft, smooth, and filled with emotion.

"It was kind of floating through the room," said Coach John Legend about Ammo's Voice. "The word that came to mind is ethereal," added Coach Adam Levine, who called Ammo "really magical" and predicted that, with all four chairs turned, "it’s gonna get nasty over here. We’re gonna fight."

Ammo's performance had "just the right amount of you in it, and that's artistry," said Coach Kelsea Ballerini, telling the singer, "you really inspire me." Coach Michael Bublé added, "You have a beautiful tone and I see that you tell a story really well."

Though Ammo seemed to be a fan of all four Coaches' work, he clearly had a special connection with Legend, who had previously played in his home country, and so he chose Team John. "Jay's voice is so cool," said Legend afterward, singling out Ammo's "lilt" and predicting, "We can have a lot of fun picking songs together."

Another point for Legend in his ongoing battle with Levine for the title of King of the 4-Chair Turns.

Coach John Legend learns as much as he teaches on The Voice

With over 10 seasons under his belt, Legend is pretty much a pro at all things The Voice. But he still gets an education every time.

"I learn so much from being on this show. I learn from Coaching. I learn from the interaction I have with these Artists, and it's very renewing," Legend told NBC Insider in February 2024. "Because, you know, I've been making records for, like, 20 years now, and to be around Artists that have that hunger and that excitement is very renewing for me, and I love that experience... and it doesn't get old."
