Tori Templet’s Cranberries-Esque Voice “Mesmerized” Adam Levine: “Blown Away”

Tori Templet earned herself a spot on Team Adam with her smoky rendition of a Taylor Swift classic.

By Elizabeth Logan

You've never heard Taylor Swift sung quite like this. For her Blind Audition on Season 27 of The Voice, 24-year-old singer Tori Templet accompanied herself on guitar as she sang "Lover" from Swift's album of the same name, her smoky voice earning her Chair turns from Coaches Adam Levine and Michael Bublé.

How to Watch

Watch The Voice on Mondays and Tuesdays at 8/7c on NBC and next day on Peacock.

Templet grew up in Atlanta listening to stars like Miley Cyrus (herself a former The Voice Coach), Selena Gomez, and Demi Lovato. These days, she does branding for a sandwich company, which she admits is a "very Gen Z job." But soon enough, she'll be on her way to a career in music.

Tori Templet's Blind Audition with Taylor Swift's "Lover" won over The Voice Coaches

After Templet finished her Blind Audition, Coach John Legend noted the "whistle tone" in her delivery, saying he was "mesmerized" by it.

Excited because they both play guitar, Levine added, "the purity and the simplicity of what you do is something that is really lacking [in the music scene]." Perhaps bonded by their shared instrument, Templet chose to go with Levine's Team Adam for the rest of the competition. Hope she likes unicorn sweaters.

Adam Levine and The Voice have both mellowed out

Templet's joining a well-oiled machine. "It used to just be kind of crazy," original Coach Levine told NBC Insider of the show's early days. "We were like the [Rolling] Stones or something. It was like chaos. [Coach] CeeLo [Green] had a bird. We were like a punk rock band. It was wild thinking back on it; it was so out of control."

Nowadays, things are much calmer. "The general tone and  the efficiency of the show, I know that sounds really weird, has gotten so pleasant," Levine said. "It’s just gotten so different, in a good way, and efficient, and kind of mellow. As boring as that may sound, it’s actually really wonderful. And I’m so proud."

After a 10-season hiatus, though, prodigal Coach Levine is not here to chill. "Team Adam's back... I feel bad for other teams" he warned in an Instagram post ahead of his return. Fellow Coaches Bublé, Legend, and Kelsea Ballerini better watch out.
