Boyle, as many know, achieved massive fame in 2009 after her Britain's Got Talent singing audition went viral. She performed "I Dreamed a Dream" from Les Mis and left everyone gobsmacked, including Judge and Got Talent mastermind Simon Cowell.
"Our expectations were quite low, but she is the perfect example of never judge a book by its cover," Cowell said while discussing Boyle on an episode of America's Got Talent (which returns this summer to NBC). "She is just the most incredible person. This was a lady who lived on her own in Scotland, and she came on the show and everything changed. Because up until that point, there was a perception that you had to look this way, or be this age, and she just changed the rulebook. Full stop."
What to know about "Lilac Wine"
Written in 1950 by the American Broadway actor, composer, and writer James Shelton, "Lilac Wine" has been covered by many prominent artists, including Nina Simone, Elkie Brooks, and Jeff Buckley. Brooks is the only artist to date to earn commercial success with her version of the song, which peaked at #16 on the UK Singles Chart in 1978.
Fans might recognize the song as part of Miley Cyrus' YouTube series The Backyard Sessions. In 2013, the Grammy-winning artist uploaded many live performances of her all-time favorite songs, and "Lilac Wine" made the list.
In addition, John Legend famously teamed up with John Mayer for an unforgettable version of the song in 2015.
