St. Denis Medical Stars Talk Hospital Relationships to Look Out For

There are two duos in St. Denis Medical that Allison Tolman and Josh Lawson find to be quite entertaining.

It hasn’t taken long for viewers to fall in love with the characters of NBC’s newest comedy series St. Denis Medical

How to Watch

Watch new episodes of St. Denis Medical Tuesdays on NBC and next day on Peacock.

Throughout the course of its successful premiere season, fans have gained a good idea of each character, including the co-workers who support them and the ones who give them the hardest time.

Actress Allison Tolman, who plays the newly appointed supervising nurse Alex, as well as actor Josh Lawson aka the ever-so egotistical Dr. Bruce, sat down with us to discuss some of the series’ most noteworthy pairs.

St. Denis Medical stars reflect on show's romantic pairings

Matt and Dr. Bruce stand together in the hospital on St. Denis Medical Season 1 Episode 6.

One ER employee that viewers are already rooting for is nurse Matt (Mekki Leeper). After coming in and wasting no time to show that he is brand-new to working in the medical field, complete with clumsiness and tons of rookie mistakes, he’s slowly starting to find his groove.

“There are characters who are changing a lot. I think Matt is learning more every day,” Tolman explained to NBC Insider. “He's gonna be a very different nurse in a year than he is now. He's getting better and better at things.”

However, Matt has been coming into his own in recent episodes and may even be catching the eye of his hospital crush, nurse Serena (Kahyun Kim) in what is undoubtedly the show's biggest "will-they-won't-they." Matt’s increasing levels of confidence and skillset might prove to give surgeon Dr. Bruce a run for his money. After all, he’s made it clear that he enjoys being seen as the top dog at the hospital. Will he let this newcomer get in the way of that?

“Yeah, he will threaten my, my power. And I will demolish him,” Lawson jokes, adding, “I have to.”

Notery (Steve Little) watches as Joyce (Wendi Mclendon Covey) and Alex (Allison Tolman) chat in a hallway.

Another dynamic that fans love is between executive director Joyce Henderson (Wendi McLendon-Covey) and Alex.

Joyce only focusing on St. Denis getting more money and recognition above their actual day-to-day tends to cause friction with Alex. The lead nurse is stern at times but will always do the right thing in order to help people. The two’s constant conflicting opinions and urges to do things their way make for hilarious scenes but not much progress at the hospital.

“Joyce is her boss but Alex is also the boss now so she's having to like learn how to keep her footing. With her boss,” Tolman continued. “So yeah, I think that's really, that's a really fun dynamic to get to see these two like strong, very different women together.”

Catch new episodes of St. Denis Medical when they premiere on Tuesday on NBC at 8/7c. Episodes are available to stream on Peacock the next day.
