SNL's "The Sound" Sketch Uses The Voice's Chair Turns to Hilarious Effect

There was lots of chair spinning in the latest Please Don't Destroy short starring Shane Gillis.

By Christopher Rudolph

Please Don't Destroy used The Voice's dramatic chair turns to hilarious effect on Saturday Night Live's March 1 episode.

How to Watch

Watch Saturday Night Live Saturdays at 11:30/10:30c on NBC and Peacock, streaming next day on Peacock.

"The Sound" is *not* The Voice, as Coach Cody Swiggums (Ben Marshall) makes clear at the outset — but like the NBC show, The Sound's four fictional Coaches are "assembling their dream teams of America's next star singers," per the show's announcer.

"During the blind auditions, all that matters is your voice," says pop producer Mike Fiesta (John Higgins), with another judge, R&B mogul Coco Summers (Ego Nwodim), adding, "One stage, one song, one opportunity."

"Anybody from anywhere can blow us away and be on our team," adds British rock icon Eddie Thrashhorn (Martin Herlihy).

The Coaches turn their backs to the stage for a blind audition, in which a contestant serenades the Coaches and audience with a beautiful version of "Amazing Grace." All four Coaches are blown away by what they hear.

They slam down their buttons, causing their chairs to spin around, but they clearly think the contestant who greets them doesn't quite match the angelic voice they just heard.

Shane Gillis and Tate McRae star in The Sound, SNL's spin on The Voice

Sitting on the stage in an electric scooter is a man named Reggie T (Shane Gillis), with a mustache, pageboy haircut, and ankle monitor.

"Let the bidding war begin... who wants me?" a pompous Reggie asks. The Coaches are so turned off by Reggie that they hit their buttons again, causing their chairs to turn them around so their backs are facing him.

"It seems for the first time in The Sound history, the judges have revoked their selection," remarks the announcer.

"Hey you can't do that! You already turned. You can't bail on me because of my looks or my vibe," Reggie tells the Coaches as they try to ignore him. Eventually their guilt gets to them, and they slowly spin around to face the stage again.

"You know, you're right. We were just caught off guard," Cody tells Reggie. "Let's start fresh. Why don't you tell us about yourself?" says Eddie.

Reggie's subsequent answers cause the Coaches to keep pressing their chair-turn buttons back in disgust. Coco eventually has enough and actually zooms off the set in her chair, which has somehow become motorized.

"You guys don't believe in me, but one day you'll see! One day you'll all see," Reggie tells them.

"Dude, there's no way you will ever make it as a musician," says Cody. The sketch then cuts to Reggie — now a superstar singer — in a music video for his new pop track, "Amazing Grace (Otaku Style)," featuring Canadian pop queen and March 1 Musical Guest Tate McRae.

Watch "The Sound" from Season 50, Episode 13 above, and stream every season of SNL on Peacock anytime.
