Focus Features' Conclave officially became an Oscar-winner Sunday with the honor of Best Adapted Screenplay for writer Peter Straughan, who turned the bestselling Robert Harris novel of the same name into an acclaimed shooting script. The film, which is now streaming exclusively on Peacock, takes the form of a tense thriller centered around the titular process to select a new pope.

"Just a huge thank you to everyone involved in making Conclave," said Straughan, who was previously nominated by The Academy for his work on adapting John le Carré's Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. He dedicated the win to his daughter, Connie, and joked that just because he was name-dropping her on a global stage, didn't mean she could have the statue itself.

"I can't tell you how much this means to me," Straughan added in the press room following the main award presentation. "I started out as a playwright in the northeast of England and the first time I got an agent, she said, 'Would you like to work in film?' I said, 'No, I just want to work in theatre.' Because Hollywood sort of seemed like an alien world, so it's surreal to me that I'm standing here now holding an Oscar."

The film — which holds a near-perfect score of 93 percent on Rotten Tomatoes — was directed by Edward Berger, whose lauded adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque's All Quiet on the Western Front took home four Oscars at the 95th annual awards ceremony.

"It was an absolute joy for me as a writer. Edward is an incredibly collaborative director," Straughan told members of the press. "I've never had a director invite me to be there for the whole shoot before and be comfortable with me talking to the actors. I've never had a director be that open and generous and collaborative. He's an absolute dream to work with and I think one of our greatest directors [working today]."
