How Many Oscars Did Wicked Win in 2025? Everything to Know
The acclaimed Wizard of Oz prequel nabbed two Academy Awards at the 97th annual ceremony.

Director Jon M. Chu's acclaimed Wicked adaptation rejoicified at the 97th Academy Awards Sunday evening with a pair of wins for Best Costume Design (Paul Tazewell) and Best Production Design (Nathan Crowley; Set Decoration: Lee Sandales). Tazewell in particular made Hollywood history as the first Black man to win the Costume category.
"This is absolutely astounding," the costume designer proclaimed in an emotional acceptance speech. "Thank you [to the] Academy for this very significant honor ... I'm so proud of this ... Thank you [to] everyone in the UK for all of your beautiful work. I could not have done this without you. My Ozian muses, Cynthia [Erivo] and Ariana [Grande], I love you so much. All the other cast. Thank you, thank you, thank you for trusting me with bringing your characters to life. This is everything."

Speaking with members of the press after accepting the award, he described the historical win as "the pinnacle" of his career. "I've been designing costumes for over 35 years, much [of it] on Broadway and now into film. The whole way through there was never a Black male designer that I saw that I could follow; that I could see as inspiration. To realize that's actually me, it becomes a Wizard of Oz moment, no place like home. So to come back the inspiration being inside of me is really remarkable."
Crowley, meanwhile, took home his very first production design Oscar after being nominated seven times over the years (mainly for his work on Christopher Nolan films). "Wicked was one of our greatest experiences of all time to make and we owe that to Jon Chu," he said onstage.
"Jon, you took us over the rainbow," added a jubliant Sandales, who was previously nominated for a pair of World War I dramas: Steven Spielberg's War Horse and Sam Mendes' 1917.
