Ariana Grande & Cynthia Erivo Sang Live In 'Wicked' To Honor Broadway Stars

Wicked stars Cynthia Erivo (Elphaba) and Ariana Grande (Glinda) opened the 97th Academy Awards Sunday with a stunning medley of famous songs from Wizard of Oz history.

Grande, who was up for Best Supporting Actress, kicked things off with the Judy Garland classic, "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." Erivo, who was nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role, then took over with a performance of "Home" from 1978's The Wiz. The two performers closed things out with Wicked's most iconic number, "Defying Gravity," which closes out the feature film.

Lasting around seven minutes, the live performance was met with an uproarious standing ovation from the gathered industry members attending the annual ceremony held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. For viewers watching at home, it was a little aperitif meant to hold them over until the wide release of Wicked: For Good this coming fall.

"I'm really excited to talk about [the sequel] because I'm excited to see the journey that they've been on. I'm excited to share it with people," Erivo said on the Oscars red carpet while in conversation with ABC7 Los Angeles. "This is literally a bookmark in a very big, beautiful book."
