Martha Stewart's tips for not needing medicine at 83
For starters, Steward credits her wellness to an early morning routine that sets the tone for the whole day. You won't catch her getting out of bed late either. She's setting that alarm for the crack of dawn.
"I wake up early, early, early — often at 4 a.m. — and read the newspaper to make sure nothing bad has happened overnight," Stewart revealed. After scrolling through the headlines, Stewart redirects her attention to fitness, another key ingredient in maintaining her sunny vibrance.
While she's no stranger to a fast-paced lifestyle, Stewart prioritizes squeezing in time for physical activity, making sure to incorporate some workouts into her weekly routine. "I do Pilates at 6:15 a.m. three times a week," Stewart told AARP, adding that she keeps active in a variety of ways, like horseback riding, hiking, and keeping busy with one of the many projects she's working on.
"I also work hard every day on things that challenge me and invigorate me..." Steward explained. "There's so much to do... big, difficult, years-long projects, but I don't want to have regrets, or "would've, could've, should've," which is a horrible feeling."
Stewart's healthy lifestyle is largely inspired by her mother, who has strongly influenced her entire career and mindset. "My mother was my idol because she was so vibrant and healthy and strong," Stewart revealed. "She had six children, lived to 93, and was the ultimate example of successful living." Stewart's mother showed her that she could age gracefully and focus on living rather than how long she'd been alive.
"Aging is not about dying; it's about living well," Stewart said. "Because people are aging so differently now... In this life, you just have to work at staying better. That's really all you can do. You work at it. Try to keep up with friendships, projects, relationships, with educating yourself — stay on top of it. Because once you're gone, what can you do? You hope you've done enough."
With Yes, Chef! on the horizon, Stewart shows no signs of slowing down soon. Watch the series premiere of Yes, Chef! on Monday, April 28 at 10/9c on NBC.
