12 years is an impressively long time to be on a television show, and it's a testament to the talent that runs through the 36-year-old every time the cameras start rolling. In an illuminating February 2025 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Hawkins spoke about his Chicago P.D. career up to this point, his now-iconic role as Kevin Atwater, and revealed the one co-star who pushes him to the limit on set — even after all these years!

"Very recently, my relationship with Sarge has grown, and I love the way we communicate now," Hawkins explained, referring to Jason Beghe who plays Sergeant Hank Voight. "He has been teaching me a lot. And he is hard on me too, which I appreciate. I haven't had that kind of attention — which I think is necessary for a young brother coming up in this type of game."

We're sure fans love to hear that the former model — who has gotten a reputation for being quite the "goofball" on set — has had such an impact on Hawkins' time on Chicago P.D.

As a Chi-town native, Hawkins revealed that he's blessed in his day-to-day life more so than others — after all, he's surrounded by family wherever he goes, whether on set or off.

"We are all truly like family," he said of the cast. "And I am here, in Chicago, with family! I can still go to my grandmother's house and touch my grandparents. I can still go to my old high school and tap into a classroom. It feels like family with my close friends all around all the time."

Hawkins wasn't kidding about the cast feeling like family at this point. The star even spends Thanksgivings with Patrick John Flueger and says they've been "brothers since day one." How cool is that?

After so many unforgettable seasons, not even Hawkins can predict what's next for the character. While he is looking forward to exploring his Atwater's newfound romantic interest, the actor genuinely doesn't know what to expect down the road, but he's grateful nonetheless.

"To be honest with you, it's hard to say, but the experience I've had on this assignment has been nothing short of amazing!" he confessed. "I think the impact we've made has been extremely exponential, whether you're a Black first responder or would-be criminal. I think you've been able to see yourself in the stories that surround Atwater, and I'm grateful for that."

When it's all said and done, Hawkins thinks that the Atwater character will live on as a "significant" piece of TV history.

"I think the character, when you look back on it, should be a significant piece of television history," he continued. "And I owe that to Dick Wolf and the platform of Wolf Entertainment, to be a part of that is nothing short of amazing."
