A new thriller is dropping into theaters next month. The fittingly titled Drop, from the horror powerhouse Blumhouse Productions, comes from a director who has released a couple of very fun scary movies with neat premises and stars an actress in one of her biggest roles since her breakout appearance on one of TV's most acclaimed prestige series.

Here’s everything you need to know about Drop, which premiered at SXSW on March 9 and will open wide in theaters on Friday, April 11.

What is Drop about?

Drop follows Violet (Meghann Fahy; The White Lotus), a widow and single mother to a young son, who finally decides to get back out there and go on a date.

After months of texting, she meets up with her date, Henry (Brandon Sklenar; Yellowstone spin-off 1923), at a swanky restaurant high up in a skyscraper. But once the date begins, she starts getting messages airdropped to her phone from an unknown sender. The mystery dropper reveals there's somebody inside Violet’s house — and her son and her sister, who is babysitting, have no idea of the danger they’re in.

If Violet wants her son to live, she needs to do exactly what the dropper demands: kill Henry, her date.

Who stars in Drop?

Drop stars Meghann Fahy as Violet. Fahy has been a presence on the stage and screen for a while, and she was part of the main cast of the Freeform drama The Bold Type, but her career leveled up following her appearance in Season 2 of HBO’s The White Lotus. Drop is her first big lead role since The White Lotus, following a main part in Hulu’s ensemble drama The Perfect Couple last year. Brandon Sklenar and Violett Beane also star as Violet’s date Henry and sister Jen, respectively.

Who directed Drop?

Drop was directed by Christopher Landon, a horror movie veteran who has had a string of acclaimed releases in recent years.

After writing several Paranormal Activity sequels, Landon directed Happy Death Day (2017), which combined a Groundhog’s Day-esque time loop with a slasher movie. Both Happy Death Day and its sequel, Happy Death Day 2 U (2019), were beloved by genre fans, as was Freaky (2020), which had a similarly meta premise combining a slasher with a body-swap comedy.

Drop doesn’t appear to be a genre mashup like some of Landon’s previous hits, but it’s got a killer concept and his sense of scary-but-fun style.

Who is the villain in Drop?

You and Violet would both like to know! Identifying whoever is sending her these airdrops might be Violet’s only hope of saving her son’s life without having to kill her date — and since you have to be relatively close in order to drop something to another person’s phone, odds are it’s somebody in the restaurant with her. Figuring out who the villain is will be a fun part of watching the movie when it comes out. (Though probably more fun for you, the audience, than it is for Violet.)

Catch Drop when it opens in theaters on Friday, April 11.
