“World-Class” BD.ii Was So “Badass,” Kelsea Blocked Adam - But Her Move Backfired

The drama!

By Elizabeth Logan

Atlanta-born BD.ii took to the stage for his Blind Audition on The Voice Season 27 with confidence and swagger. Singing "Adorn" by Miguel, the singer-songwriter's smooth, rich voice earned Chair turns from all four Coaches, though one got blocked.

How to Watch

Watch The Voice on Mondays and Tuesdays at 8/7c on NBC and next day on Peacock.

It was a sneaky and competitive game the Coaches played, but one that ultimately, BD.ii won. Here's what happened.

BD.ii sings Miguel's "Adorn" for The Voice Season 27 Blind Audition

His basketball career derailed by an ankle injury, BD.ii threw himself into singing, and had that undeniable "it" factor during his Blind Audition. Coach Michael Bublé hit his button almost immediately, followed by Kelsea BalleriniAdam Levine and John Legend then followed suit, and all four were grooving to his music before Levine saw that he'd been Blocked (by Ballerini) and sank down in his Chair, pouting.

When the song was finished, Ballerini pitched herself as being knowledegable beyond her Country roots. "I am actively having crossover songs, for other artists and with other artists. I don’t believe in boxes," she said. "I’m a sad, sad man, because you are world class. You’re a badass," mourned Levine.

With Levine out of the running, Bublé appealed to the fact that BD.ii's voice is, well, pretty sexy. "He’s not the threat. I’m the threat," he said, promising that they would use his music to "help grow the population of America."

But as smooth as Bublé is, baby-making music belongs to Legend. The longtime Coach mentioned that he had written with Miguel, and praised BD.ii for taking an approach to the song that "made it sexier, made it cooler." And his wisdom won the day. "Imma go with my boy John," the Artist said. Afterward, Legend praised "angel Kelsea Ballerini" for taking away the competition Levine might have posed. All in a day's work.

The Voice Coach John Legend is more than just ballads

Legend is the perfect Coach for someone with smooth R&B stylings, though the "All of Me" singer is purposeful about never sticking to just one mode. "I feel like sometimes people think I’m just a balladeer, because my most successful songs have been ballads," Legend explained to the Dallas Morning News. He continued, "My entire body of work is pretty diverse and dynamic. That’s a misconception that annoys me just a little bit. I wish people would give my full repertoire more of a listen and appreciate the range that I’ve shown." Duly noted.

Then again, there's a reason Jimmy Fallon chose him for a "sexy" duet on The Tonight Show.
