NBC's music competition show American Song Contest is all about the, well, song. If you're familiar with the wildly popular Eurovision Song Contest, you'll understand this concept. Unlike other singing competition shows, which rely heavily on covers of popular tracks, the Artists competing on ASC are all established in some form and have their own catalog of music. Each Artist—there are 56 total, representing either a U.S. state, territory, or Washington, D.C.—has submitted one song into the competition that they think can win. The song will be a Contestant's fighter throughout the competition, and it's up to viewers—plus a Jury of music experts—to decide which one is best.
That's a lot of pressure to put on one song, but this is the point of American Song Contest. You have to fall in love with an Artist's original work just as much as their charisma and stage presence—or the fact that they're from your home state. As ASC Host Kelly Clarkson says, "It's about the song that touches you. People are going to end up [being] like, 'Man, I love my Texas person, but that girl from North Dakota, whoa. That was an amazing song. I've got to give my support to her.'"
ASC producer Christer Björkman echoes this sentiment. "It doesn't matter how famous you are or how not known you are," he says. "If you come across with your song, you win, and you just have to be trustworthy. You just have to be passionate about what you do. You have to deliver your goods."
