Seth Meyers Hilariously Details Not Proposing to His Wife in Paris: "Shame on Me"
But when the Late Night with Seth Meyers Host did actually pop the question, it was very, very sweet.
After five years of dating, Seth Meyers proposed to his wife, human rights lawyer Alexi Ashe. The couple has been happily married since 2013 and Saturday Night Live’s former head writer previously admitted he’d waited “too long” to pop the question.
“The only mistake, the only mistake I made with my wife is that I made her wait five years before I married her. That is too long for a woman of her caliber,” the Late Night with Seth Meyers Host said in his 2019 Lobby Baby stand-up special.

Now, after more than a decade of marriage, Meyers and Ashe are proud parents to their three adorable children: sons Ashe and Axel as well as daughter Addie. They’re also dog parents to their sweet pup, Frisbee, who was a big part of their engagement story.
Seth Meyers proposed to Alexi Ashe with the help of their family dog, Frisbee
Meyers made his proposal to Ashe a family affair, incorporating their adorable Italian greyhound, Frisbee, who’s even appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers and has a hilarious beef with SNL alum Andy Samberg.
“I tied [the ring] in a bow around our dog’s collar,” Meyers shared in August 2013 during an appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon (via People). Meyers and Frisbee were waiting at home for Ashe, but she was running a bit late. So Meyers had to keep all-eyes on the ring.
“I just had to sit there looking at the dog,” Meyers recalled to Fallon at the time. “I was like, ‘The dog's going to eat the ring.’”
Meyers had reason to be extra cautious. He once told Bon Appetit that even though Frisbee weighs only eight pounds, she “has incredible vertical leap” and “can jump on a table and get away with a large amount of finger food before you even notice the blur.”
Thankfully, Frisbee was a very good girl. When Ashe eventually got home, Meyers popped the question and she said yes.

Seth Meyers did not propose in Paris, as he hilariously details in his stand-up
Meyers recalled in his Lobby Baby stand-up special how his future fiancée thought he was going to pop the question during a birthday trip to Paris, a year before they got engaged. They had been dating for several years at this point, and Will Forte had also jokingly proposed to her sister, Ariel, at an SNL after-party.
“When we were together for four years, we were trying to figure out what to do for my wife’s birthday and we decided to go to Europe,” Meyers explained in his special. While he’d suggested they go to Prague because he heard “it’s amazing,” Ashe wanted to go to Paris because they always have a good time there.
“I said ‘Hey, it’s your birthday. If you wanna go to Paris, let’s go to Paris.’” Meyers recalled. “The first night in Paris my wife is more miserable than I’ve ever seen her. And finally I said, ‘Why are you so upset?’ And she said, ‘Every one of my friends said if he’s bringing you to Paris for your birthday, he is going to propose.’ To which I said, ‘Did you f------ tell them about Prague? Did you tell them my opening offer was Prague? A place where famously no one gets engaged!’”
Meyers admitted that he may have made a mistake by bringing her there. “But shame on me, you cannot bring a woman who is expecting an engagement ring to Paris. It is too romantic a place for that,” he said in his special. “At one point we were crossing a bridge going over the river Seine and my passport fell out of my pocket. And I looked down and I realized it would be easier to kick it into the river and replace it at the embassy than it would be to take a knee in Paris without an engagement ring.”

When did Seth Meyers and Alexi Ashe get married?
Months after SNL’s former "Weekend Update" anchor proposed, Meyers and Ashe got married on September 1, 2013 on Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts.
The bride stunned in a custom-made Carolina Herrera gown, while the groom wore a custom Ralph Lauren Black Label suit, according to Vogue. Dozens of SNL alums and celebrities attended the couple’s wedding, where Brad Paisley performed his song “Then.” And Frisbee was, of course, also part of the ceremony. Briefly, that is.
“We got married on a farm, and the dog barked a couple of times at some passing sheep,” Meyers told People of their wedding. “But one of our flower girls was very good. She just threw [Frisbee] in her lap with her dress over her and then Frisbee fell asleep … she passed out.”
