How Michael Bublé's Sexy "Spicy Margarita" Duet with Jason Derulo Came to Be
The Voice Coach was excited to show fans a different side when collaborating with the R&B star.
If you thought Michael Bublé couldn't cross over into different music genres, you've never listened to this song.
Fans of The Voice are intimately familiar with the star's classic smoothe, jazzy vocals that at times channel all-time greats like Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, but this unforgettable 2024 duet with R&B star Jason Derulo proves that Bublé's silky-smooth voice can level-up any song.
The saucy collaboration is called "Spicy Margarita," and as good as the song sounds, the official music video is even better.
One word describes this combination of such talented singers: Sexy. (And the music video itself mirrors that feeling!)
The song begins in very Bublé-fashion as his vocals take center stage, but once the Derulo-produced beat begins, the song reaches new heights and never looks back. It's everything a catchy song should be — easy to sing along to and, just as importantly, easy to dance to.
Longtime Bublé fans certainly recognize some aspects of "Spicy Margarita." The song samples the star's cover of "Sway" by Dean Martin, which appeared on his 2001 album BaBalu. More than 20 years later, Bublé found the perfect partner to re-introduce the song to the masses. The Latin-inspired drums and production fit Bublé's flawless vocals effortlessly, and we know fans would give anything to hear more unexpected collabs like "Spicy Margarita" in the future. The song is certainly heating us up as we deal with the cold temperatures of winter.
So how did this unlikely partnership — and friendship — between the two stars happen? In a 2024 interview with ET, the singers recalled how everything came about.
"Well, it all started [when] I asked Michael if he would sing a Christmas song with me," Derulo recalled.
"'No!' was the answer," Bublé said.
"That's exactly what it sounded like and it hurt me to the core," Derulo continued. "But he had a great idea and was like, 'How about if we did the clash of worlds thing? I don't know why more people aren't asking me to bring what I do to a different [musical genre].'"
Who knows? After winning Season 26 of The Voice, Bublé is looking to go back-to-back in 2025, and if the Coach pulls off the impossible, he could take advantage of his momentum by releasing more innovative duets before fans know what hit them.
