Garth Brooks Says He Found His Wife Trisha Yearwood In a "Past Life"

"I found her in the past life. I'll find her in the next," the country star said on The Kelly Clarkson Show about his wife.

Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood are one of country music's most beloved power couples. They've been married for two decades and their love is always on display whenever they take the stage together, whether they're performing at NBC's Opry 100: A Live Celebration or President Jimmy Carter's funeral

How to Watch

Watch Opry 100: A Live Celebration live on Wednesday, March 19 at 8/7c on NBC and simulcast on Peacock.

Yearwood has lovingly called her husband her "forever duet partner" on Instagram, while Brooks told Deadline his wife has "one of the greatest voices ever" and he's "lucky to know her as a husband, really lucky to know her as my best friend.” Through the years, the duo has not only collaborated on music, they've also raised a blended family together. Read on to learn all about Brooks' daughters, what the country star has shared about fatherhood, his marriage to Yearwood, and more.

When did Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood get married?

Brooks and Yearwood tied the knot on December 10, 2005 at a small ceremony at their Oklahoma home, and have been happily married ever since.

The "If Tomorrow Never Comes" singer proposed to Yearwood earlier that year, in front of 7,000 fans, during a show in Bakersfield, California, according to The Bakersfield Californian. "It's the perfect Christmas gift to each other. We could not be happier," Brooks said in a statement after their wedding.

How many kids does Garth Brooks have?

Brooks is a proud father of three adult daughters — Taylor,  August, and Allie — all of whom he welcomed with his ex-wife Sandy Mahl.

In 2000, Brooks stepped away from country music at 39 years old to fully dedicate his time to his daughters. "That's when life kinda began for me," Brooks told CBS Sunday Morning in November 2023. "I thought the '90s were rockin' — the '90s couldn't hold a candle to getting to be a dad to those kids for the 2000s."

More than a decade later, once his daughters were grown up, Brooks came out of retirement. "All my babies are fine with it, Miss Yearwood is fine with it. So now I get to do what I love to do — play music," he told Good Morning America at the time.

And while Brooks is regarded as one the best-selling artists of all time and is in the Country Music Hall of Fame, he says nothing can top the time he's had with his daughters. "Best years of my life," Brooks told SiriusXM about raising his three girls. "You'll run into people and they'll go, 'Man, high school was so good, I wish I could go back there.' For me, just being a dad is the best."

Trisha Yearwood embraces her role as a "bonus mom" to Garth Brooks' daughters

In an interview with SheKnows, Yearwood explained that she prefers the title of "bonus mom" to stepmom. “Jada Pinkett Smith told me years ago, she's like, ‘you’re a bonus mom, don't call yourself something else.’ So I've taken that and run with it," she said, adding that the whole family comes together on the couple's wedding anniversary every year to decorate the Christmas tree.

Yearwood has described Taylor, August, and Allie as a "gift" as she stepped into her role as a parent after they got married. "I had a dog before I married Garth but no children of my own. I never even really babysat!" Yearwood told People in 2021. "So I didn't know what to do with three young girls. Garth was such a wonderful mentor to me as to how to be a parent, and he told me, 'You'll find your way with each of them. Don't try to be their best friend, and don't try to be their mom.'"

"They let me learn my way and allowed me to be that third parent in their lives," she continued. "They were a gift that I didn't know I needed. I didn't know how much children brought into your life until I got a chance to be a part of their lives."

Garth Brooks is grateful for his daughters and wife Trisha Yearwood

In a November 2023 interview on The Kelly Clarkson Show, Brooks opened up about just how much Yearwood means to him after Kelly Clarkson asked him what gratitude means to him.

"When it comes to the future, I think what you're grateful for is just one more day, right? Of getting to do this. So I think that's it. Truthfully, if I could say what I'd love to say, it's the day I take my last breath on this planet, I'd love for my three girls to be around me. I'd love for the queen [Yearwood] to be around me [too]," Brooks said, further answering the question of how he'd like to spend his final moments.

That's when Brooks started to get emotional — and Clarkson did, too. "As far as Miss Yearwood," Brooks said, "I've said this before: I found her in the past life. I'll find her in the next."

"Well, have a great day, everybody!" Clarkson said jokingly to break the heartfelt tension, pretending to get up and walk away.

The audience (and Brooks) laughed, and he added, "[Yearwood] makes it fun. She makes it really fun!"

"I'm gonna cry at lunch, Garth!" Clarkson said. "...You're tearing up, and you're making me tear up!"

"I'm not tearing up," Brooks said, smiling, before wiping away some very real tears.
