Law & Order: SVU fans have been loving Mariska Hargitay (Olivia Benson) since she debuted on the show in fall 1999. The show has been pivotal to Hargitay's life, both professionally and personally. Proof of the latter category is in the fact Hargitay actually met her IRL husband, Peter Hermann, on the set of the show. Yes, Hermann himself is an SVU veteran!

Mariska Hargitay's husband, Peter Hermann, grew up in Germany
Although Hermann was born in New York City, his family moved back to their home country of Germany when he was only two months old, and they didn't return to the U.S. until he was 10.
He attended Yale University
Once he moved back to the states, Hermann went on to master the English language and attend the prestigious Yale University before becoming a high-school English teacher through Teach for America.
Mariska Hargitay and Peter Hermann met on the set of Law & Order in 2002
It wasn't long before Hermann pivoted from teaching to acting. Ultimately, a guest starring role on Law & Order: SVU Season 2 led to the actor meeting series regular Hargitay on set.
He played Trevor Langan
After debuting his role as defense attorney Trevor Langan on Season 2 of Law & Order: SVU, Hermann continued in the role for over 15 years totaling roughly 30 episodes.
The couple tied the knot in 2004
On August 28, 2004, roughly two years later, the couple wed in Santa Barbara, California.
Hermann realized Hargitay was the one during her 40th birthday bash. "I actually saw Hargitay with all of the people that she loved around her," he told People. "It was like seeing this person who was now in the soil… which was this abundance of people and this abundance of love and I thought, 'I want to be part of that soil.'"
Hermann also writes children's books
In addition to being an accomplished actor, Hermann is also an author! He published his first picture book for children in February 2018 titled If the S in Moose Comes Loose.
Naturally, Hargitay took to IG to congratulate her husband for the accomplishment.
"As the wordsmith himself puts it, this book is a 'Madcap spelling romp'... who says that? Only my brilliant husband," Wrote Hargitay in the IG caption. "My brilliant AUTHOR husband, whom I'm so'ridiculously excited + very proud' of."
