Why You Recognize Chicago Med's New Doctor
Amid many Chicago Med changes, a new doctor has entered the operating room.
The midseason finale of Chicago Med featured many milestone moments, including the exit of the beloved Dr. Ethan Choi (Brian Tee) as he married and left to open a mobile clinic with April Sexton (Yaya DaCosta). But when one hospital door closes, another one opens, and it looks like The Young and The Restless' Mishael Morgan as Dr. Petra Dupre. Here's everything we know about Dr. Dupre and what her introductions could mean for the future of the hospital.
Who is Mishael Morgan on Chicago Med?
She plays Dr. Petra Dupre.
Dr. Petra Dupre is introduced in Episode 9, "This Could Be the Start of Something New," as the lead programmer of O.R. 2.0., the new operating room at Gaffney Medical. While the episode centered primarily on Choi's notice and wedding, it also provided developments for Crockett Marcel (Dominic Rains) and his ongoing storyline with the mysterious millionaire Jack Dayton (Sasha Roiz), who Crockett rescued at the beginning of the season.
As a do-it-all business tycoon, Dayton has invested heavily in Gaffney Medical Center throughout Season 8, throwing Crockett in the limelight and bringing Dr. Dupre into the picture. The episode began with a meeting between the Chicago Med doctors, led by Dayton, Dupre, Crockett, and Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson). Dayton and the group are there for the opening of a new "advanced surgical suite" known as the O.R. 2.0., which will be led by Crockett.
Crockett takes the stage and acknowledges Dr. Dupre, the creator of the operating room and the expert responsible for teaching Crockett all of the "bells and whistles" of state-of-the-art design. Touting features like robotics, A.I., advanced sensory detections, and much more, Dupre developed the set-up to advance medical science at the hospital. Dupre gives the doctors a demonstration of some of the jaw-dropping new features of the hospital's addition, and everyone is thrilled.
As expected, Crockett immediately receives a high-risk surgery request for a man with pancreatic cancer. Crockett hesitates, but Dayton insists. Despite the gamble, the patient is willing, so Crockett agrees to move forward with the dangerous procedure. Unbeknownst to Crockett, Dayton invites a big crowd of media folks and doctors to watch the surgery in the shiny new operating room. Crockett instantly voices his protests, but Dayton assures him that the tech will promise a successful surgery. Telling Crockett to have some more faith in himself, Dayton allows the crowd to watch, despite it being a life-or-death moment for the patient.
During the operation, the robotics quickly complicate the procedure, and Dupre is forced to override the A.I. for Crockett to proceed. The "inoperable" tumor is removed, and the surgery is a success, but Crockett has concerns for Dr. Dupre. Dupre reveals that she had the risk threshold set too low during the surgery, so when Crockett proved to be much more adept than anticipated, there were issues, and she needed to recalibrate. While it was a tense moment, it's also a roundabout way of Dupre admitting to Crockett that she is impressed by his surgical skills.
Who is the actress who plays Dr. Petra Dupre?
Mishael Morgan. You may recognize her as Hilary Curtis and Amanda Sinclair on the daytime soap opera The Young and the Restless. Morgan's entrance as Dr. Dupre marks her first role since her soap opera exit. Morgan took to Instagram to introduce herself to the One Chicago family, and needless to say, viewers are curious to see what she'll bring to the O.R. 2.0.
What's next for Dr. Dupre on Chicago Med?
In the midseason finale's closing moments, the doctors of Chicago Med face the consequences of Big Money getting involved in the medical world. Goodwin receives a call letting her know Dayton purchased a controlling interest in the Gaffney Medical Group...meaning that a man with zero medical experience and many problematic morals is now calling the shots.
With all these changes to the administration of the hospital, the future is up in the air for every doctor and nurse at Gaffney Medical Center. Dr. Dupre has entered during a time of substantial change, so it will be interesting to see whether or not she's caught in some chaotic crosshairs.
New episodes of Chicago Med, Chicago Fire, and Chicago P.D. will resume on Wednesday, January 4, 2023, for the return of One Chicago Wednesdays. Until then, catch up on Peacock.
