Suits LA Episode 2 Makes Reference to Harvey Specter, Reveals Its True Bromance

Suits LA Episode 2 made its first reference to the original and saw the emergence of a new TV bromance.

By Tyler McCarthy

Suits LA is in full swing as a chilling Hollywood mystery takes shape and forces Ted Black (Stephen Amell) to confront mistakes and burned bridges from his past. Just when it seemed like everyone close to him had either run away or betrayed him, one of Black’s remaining close friends emerged as a powerful person in his corner in Episode 2.

How to Watch

Watch Suits: LA Sundays at 9/8c on NBC and next day on Peacock.

As if the thrilling plot twists and turns weren’t enough, Episode 2 marks the first time that an overt reference to the original USA Network series was made, teasing the past relationship between Ted Black and Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht).

Ted Black Calls on His Only Remaining Friend For Help

In Episode 1, we were introduced to Kevin (Troy Winbush), a cop from Ted’s days as a federal prosecutor in New York who was seemingly his ally in the case where it all came crashing down for him. In the present, Kevin is down to do some freelance investigative work for Ted in Los Angeles. Specifically, to look into his client Lester Thompson (Kevin Weisman), who Ted went out of his way to keep as a client after Stuart Lane (Josh McDermitt) took half of their law firm and basically implied he believes Lester is guilty of murdering his business partner.

Ted has a lot to prove with the Lester case to both the world and himself. In Episode 2, he notes that every instinct he has tells him that Lester is innocent and if he can’t trust his instincts at a time when his firm is at war… well, nothing good will come of it. That’s why he takes it so personally when Kevin starts questioning those instincts during Lester’s deposition. Both men worked in the business of catching criminals and liars and Kevin feels like Lester reeks of dishonesty and isn’t shy about telling his longtime friend that in blunt terms that no one really talks to Ted with.

This is further exacerbated when Kevin’s crack investigative skills help him learn that Lester was stealing money from the murder victim. This leads to the dynamic duo having an all-out screaming match in the lobby of their building they eventually have to apologize to each other for once cooler heads prevail. Ted even promises Kevin that if he truly believes Lester is guilty of murder, he’ll let him walk away at any time.

The scene was reminiscent of another dynamic duo who sometimes fought over legal and personal matters. After Episode 1 made the world think that Ted and Stuart were going to have the kind of friendship that Harvey Specter and Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams) once had in the original, it’s looking more and more like that will be the Ted and Kevin relationship.

Speaking to NBC Insider, Amell noted that fans can expect to see this dynamic continue. However, he also noted that, given how few people Ted has in his personal life, he hopes fences between his character and Stuart can be mended.

“It’s really the friendship that he’s built with Kevin and Troy Winbrush has been fantastic so far and anyone yearning for that bromance, I think can find it there,” he said.

Harvey Specter is mentioned on Suits LA for the first time

Episode 2 had a moment that was previously teased in a trailer for the series in which Kevin grabs an old photo in Ted’s office that includes him and Harvey. Judging by the attire and setting, it seems the two attorneys played on some kind of amateur baseball team together back on the East Coast.

“I remember this guy, great ball player, what was his name? Harry, something like that,” Lester said pretending to get Harvey’s name wrong.

He went on to say that he never liked him for two reasons. The first is that he’s the only guy he knew that was more cocky than Ted. Second, he was pretty.

“Can never trust the pretty ones,” he said.

While this hardly reveals exactly how Harvey Specter will return to the fold when he makes his guest star appearance in a future episode, it does explain how he knows the key players in Suits LA and what their relationship is. Luckily for them it seemingly wasn’t adversarial.

Still, there’s a lot of mystery to be had in terms of Harvey’s return and Lester’s murder case that curious fans will just have to tune in to more episodes of Suits LA to discover.
