Why Jocko Sims Says Reynolds Is in for 'a Bumpy Ride' After Some Surprising News
Reynolds and his father's relationship just got a lot more complicated.
New Amsterdam fans finally got a look at the state of Floyd Reynolds (Jocko Sims) and his estranged father's relationship. And to put it simply, as Sims told NBC Insider, "Things [are] a little bit more complicated."
We left the two on shaky ground in the Season 4 finale after a dangerous storm opened the door to communication. And despite intending to embark on some father-son bonding time in Season 5, Episode 2, titled "Hook, Line, and Sinker," an impromptu day trip nearly broke them. Against his better judgement, Reynolds called off work and ended up following his father onto private property to fish. Everything was going well until the two men nearly got caught by Homeland Security.
They were able to escape, but Reynolds was understandably upset. His father didn't understand his anger and insisted on returning to the illegal fishing spot, while Reynolds left him there. When recounting the story to Iggy, the psychologist gave Reynolds' father an unofficial diagnosis: He may have bipolar disorder. This could be a reason for his irresponsible and erratic behavior over the years.
"You think you want something like this," Sims told NBC Insider about Reynolds' developing relationship with his dad. "And then he might have bitten off a little bit more than he can chew. At the same time, it's Dr. Reynolds, and we know him to be a person who is very endearing and he cares. And he wants to forgive his father. So, I think Reynolds will be able to take that head-on."
So, what's in store for Reynolds in the episodes to come? "It's gonna be a bumpy ride," the actor says. "But he's gonna do what he can to just ensure that they have some sort of relationship that they can form and find some forgiveness. If it turns out that he's actually bipolar, Reynolds is gonna step up and do what he can to help him.
