Everything to Know About the PGA's 2025 Players Championship: Where to Watch, Players, Purse & More

They don't call it the “strongest field in golf” for nothing.

By Adam Pockross

The Players Championship, one of the most prestigious tournaments in all of of professional golf, is coming in hot for its not-to-be-missed 51st go around. And thanks to The Golf ChannelNBC, and Peacock, you can catch all the swinging action, featuring 144 of the best golfers in the world doing their best to tame one of the toughest tracks in the sport.

Just like he was last year, the world's No. 1, Scottie Scheffler, will be the defending champ at the 2025 Players Championship, which takes place yet again at one of the most prestigious courses on the PGA Tour, the Pete Dye-designed Stadium Course at Tournament Players Club Sawgrass (TPC Sawgrass for short) in the Jacksonville, Florida area of Ponte Vedra Beach, where the tourney has been held since 1982.

Let's take a closer look at everything you need to know about the 2025 Players Championship.

When is the 2025 PGA Players Championship?

The Players Championship, or simply The Players, will be held at TPC Sawgrass from March 13-16.

What is The Players Championship, and why is it such an important PGA tournament?

Since the inaugural tourney in 1974, when legend Jack Nicklaus beat J. C. Snead by two strokes to take home a $50,000 first place prize, the Players Championship has lived up to expectations as one of the most important tournaments of the year, particularly since the tournament is owned by the Tour itself, and the course is located right next to the PGA headquarters. While The Players has evolved over the years (and we're not just talking about the total purse, which is now up to a staggering $25 million), it remains a special stop on Tour, right up there with the four Majors.

"It's just special. This is our event. It's the strongest field in golf. These are all the guys we play against throughout the year... top players, guys that played well last year, are currently playing well. And we're home at TPC Sawgrass; this is a proper test you haven't seen necessarily," 2015 champion Ricky Fowler told NBC's Mike Tirico in 2023. "Long hitters win, or short hitters, there's been a good variety, the golf course does a great job of whoever's playing well, those guys are gonna have a chance."

TPC Sawgrass, including the famous island-green on the Par 3 17th hole, is certainly one of the reasons The Players Championship is so special. Another would be the players themselves, as the tourney boasts one of the top fields in golf, with only the highest ranked players on the PGA Tour invited, and no amateurs or club pros like you'd see in the Major Opens.

Which golfers have the best odds at winning the 2025 Players Championship?

Colloquially known as the “strongest field in golf,” the Players Championship will feature a who's who of the PGA Tour. Besides Scottie Scheffler going for a first-ever three-peat, you can expect to see plenty of other big names in contention as well, including Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa, Ludvig Aberg, Justin Thomas, Hideki Matsuyama, Tommy Fleetwood, Patrick Cantlay, Sungjae Im, Shane Lowry, Jordan Spieth, Wyndham Clark, Will Zalatoris, Viktor Hovland, and Tony Finau.

Mow much money does the winner of the Players Championship receive?

The first place winner receives a purse of $4.5 million in the 2025 Players Championship. There is a total purse of $25 million.
