Tina Fey Talks Being on Tour with Amy Poehler: "We're Having So Much Fun"

Former Saturday Night Live cast member Tina Fey reunited with her former "Weekend Update" co-anchor Jimmy Fallon on January 10, paying a visit to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to talk about the 2024 Mean Girls musical adaptation. During their catchup session, Fallon asked about Fey's current comedy tour with their former coworker and friend Amy Poehler.

"We're having so much fun," Fey told Fallon of her Restless Leg Tour with Poehler, which kicked off in 2023. "Because, basically, it's like a paid moms vacation away. We go on a plane, we go someplace, we go to a nice hotel—and all we do is mom stuff all day. It's like: 'You know what? I've heard there's a wonderful museum here.'"

They'll often enjoy "a nice brunch" before hitting the stage, too. "It's exactly like whatever Chappelle and Rock are up to on the road," Fey joked.

"And then after the show, I'll be like, 'I don't want to get a drink, do you?' And she's like, 'I don't either. Good night.' And then we go to bed, and we're so happy," Fey said with clear delight.

Restless Leg Tour: What is the Tina Fey and Amy Poehler show about?

So what can people expect at a Restless Leg Tour show? 

Stories, banter, and more, Fey told Fallon. "It's a lot of different things—there's joke-jokes, and question-and-answer, and improv." Fey and Poehler have certainly had the practice onstage: Even before they both joined the SNL cast, the two wrote and performed comedy in Second City's touring company in the 1990s. 

"How are the audiences?" Fallon asked. 

Great, Fey says. "A lot of times, it's Gen X women, like us," she added.

"Sometimes, we do a 4:00 p.m. show, and, like, those are our people. They are the best audiences: They are there. They are sober. They are ready to laugh. They have already looked at Waze for how long it's going to take to get home. They have, like, a little bag from the HomeGoods they hit on the way to see us," Fey joked. "But they really are awesome."

As for the rowdiest city, that honor goes to Fey's hometown. 

"We played Philly right before Christmas. And guess what—what a surprise, right?—Philly was the rowdiest of any American city," Fey told Fallon.

"We were at The Met, which was beautiful. But in this beautiful balcony, there was what I assume was a bachelorette party, or maybe just a gang, I don't know," Fey said. "And they just kept yelling at the stage a lot." When security finally came to kick them out, "they were like, 'Yeah. Yeah, you're right. We overshot it.' Like, they knew."

This path of conversation led to a very funny exchange that found Fey trying, once again, to teach Fallon how to talk in a Philly accent. "You can't do it, bro," Fey told Fallon.
