Listen to Susan Boyle's Captivating Cover of the Classic Hymn "Amazing Grace"
The viral Britain's Got Talent Finalist chose the song because it brings her peace.
In 2019, 10 years after Susan Boyle's ultra-viral audition on Britain's Got Talent, the singer celebrated her eighth album titled Ten by appearing on the BBC's Song of Praise. There, Boyle chose to sing the beloved tune "Amazing Grace," attributing it to her faith.
"You get grace from God. You get blessings from God. Amazing Grace [is for] the people who have been lost an found again," Boyle explained the song's personal meaning to her.
During her gorgeous performance at the Glasgow Cathedral, Boyle started out by crooning with a perfectly balanced tone. She sang with passion, immersing herself in the music with strong vibrato and pure emotion. She told the story of the song's moving message without overdoing the vocals, and brought everything together with a final peaceful note.
What to know about "Amazing Grace"
With lyrics by poet John Newton and originally published in 1779, "Amazing Grace" is a classic Christian hymn and one of the most well-known religious songs. In 1885, Baptist William Walker penned the melody that is most commonly associated with the tune today. The lyrics tell the story of being forgiven regardless of one's mistakes in the past, and the song eventually became closely tied to the abolitionist movement due to its message that speaks on overcoming hardships. According to CBS, it is estimated to be performed over 10 million times a year.
"It caught the imagination of America," music journalist Steve Turner and author of Amazing Grace: The Story of America's Most Beloved Song told the outlet. "'Amazing Grace' is, in a sense, the story of starting this new life and going through toils and snares."
