There Was a Major Randall Reveal in the Latest This Is Us Flash-Forward
A hint? His political career is thriving.
There was a lot to celebrate in This Is Us Season 6, Episode 13, titled "Day of the Wedding," as the Pearson family came together to celebrate Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Phillip's (Chris Geere) nuptials. But of course, the happy day was not without its various distractions.
It's five years into the future, and Rebecca's (Mandy Moore) memory is in decline as her Alzheimer's advances. Meanwhile, Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson) and Madison (Caitlin Thompson) are determined to dissect Kevin's (Justin Hartley) secret wedding romance. In between it all, there was one revelation about Randall (Sterling K. Brown) that nearly went unnoticed: He's now a senator.
The news is implied after Randall is taken aback when his mother believes the late Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) will be at the wedding. In fact, throughout the episode, Randall is unsure of how to handle the progression of Rebecca's Alzheimer's disease. "I guess with the swearing in and everything, I've missed some things," he tells Miguel (Jon Huertas). Moments later, Miguel addresses Randall as "Senator Pearson," confirming his new political title.
This development has been heavily foreshadowed since the early seasons of the show. Randall was inspired to get into politics by his biological father, William (Ron Cephas Jones), and successfully ran for Philadelphia City Council. Most recently, we know he was debating whether or not to run for senator, as he discussed the opportunity with Rebecca in Season 6, Episode 10 ("Every Version of You"). At the end of the episode, we see him schedule a call with Senator Gamble to discuss the possibility of his candidacy.
"If I run I'll win," Randall told his mother. "And if I win, I can't even imagine where this thing will end."
So the real question is, will his career stop at senator?
"Randall is 100 percent a rising star in the political world," series writer Kay Oyegun told NBC Insider. "He's a phenom."
Naturally, we'll keep watching to find out.
