The Voice Winner Jordan Smith Advances to American Song Contest Semi-Finals
"I can't imagine bringing home my second TV win," Smith said.
We now know five Artists who have advanced to American Song Contest's Semi-Finals, two of them which were solely selected by a Jury of music industry experts. The first was Hueston from Rhode Island, and you just might recognize the second one: Jordan Smith from Kentucky, a.k.a the Season 9 winner of The Voice.
For the uninitiated, American Song Contest follows 56 Artists each representing either a U.S. state, territory, or Washington D.C. who have all submitted an original song they hope viewers will vote as the best. The winner of Best Original Song will be determined through a series of rounds and votes both by fans and the aforementioned Jury. In every round, the Jury gets to nominate one Artist to automatically advance to the next stage of the competition—regardless of viewer opinions. So far, those Artists have been Jordan Smith and Hueston.
Smith earned this coveted spot thanks to his inspiring song, "Sparrow," which clearly wowed the Jury. Remember: Smith took home the Season 9 Voice crown under the guidance of then-Coach Adam Levine. He's since released four studio albums and written a song, "Ashes," for Celine Dion.
"I can't imagine bringing home my second TV win," Smith said. "It would be right there on the shelf next to my trophy from The Voice."
When speaking on the inspiration for "Sparrow," Smith said, "For many Kentuckians, faith is an integral part of who we are, and that really comes into play in this song. If you ever felt like you're waiting on the ground for your moment to shine, this song is for you."
At the start of April 4's show, we'll find out the three Artists from Episode 2 who will advance to the Semi-Finals based on a combination of fan and Jury votes.(They'll join week 1 Semi-Finalists Hueston, Smith, AleXa, Michael Bolton, and Christian Pagán.) Ultimately, a total of 20 Artists will qualify for the Semi-Finals. Ten will then move on to the Grand Final, which airs May 9.
We know that sounds like a long wait, so in the meantime, stream "Sparrow" and every other Contestants' tracks to your heart's content right now.
American Song Contest airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET on NBC. Catch up on NBC.com.
