In October 2024, McMahan stopped by TODAY with Hoda & Jenna to talk about her 2024 special, Breadwinner. During their conversation, Hager couldn't hide her excitement, asking the comedian, "Don't you think I'm your biggest fan?"
"You really are. I feel like you're about to be in my bushes outside my house, just saying," joked McMahan.
As it turns out, Hoda Kotb knew McMahan would make a great host, as she revealed during the comedian's October visit.
"I think I even had a conversation with you a long, long time ago," Kotb told Hager and McMahan. "We had a little conversation about when she was just starting out. I already saw in Heather... she already's climbing the mountain, you're amazing, you have such a long runway. I thought how great you would be at this job one day."
"Come for my job. It's a really great job," quipped Kotb, who had already announced her TODAY departure.
"I'm just so happy to be here. Y'all are always my favorite people to see, this is so much fun," replied McMahan.
