Yes! A new two-hour episode of Dateline airs on Friday, February 14, at 9/8c on NBC, reported by NBC News’ Craig Melvin.
Friday’s broadcast — ”Return to the Lake” — will share new details and developments in the case of Susan Smith, the South Carolina mother who was convicted of murdering her two young sons, 1 and 3 years old, in 1994. Smith, now 53, is currently serving a life sentence in prison after she confessed to rolling her car into a lake with her two children buckled into their car seats. Smith was denied parole in November 2024.
In Dateline’s new episode, Melvin speaks with Smith’s ex-husband, David Smith, who said he would have preferred if she received the death penalty instead of a life sentence. “I mean, Craig, I know that they said she had a tough life growing up and I’ve never tried to make light of that, but you don’t kill your children for what happened to you. I wanted an eye for an eye, but the jury saw different, so,” he tells Melvin in a preview for “Return to the Lake.”
