"I Thank You For Seeing Me": The Holdovers' Da'Vine Joy Randolph Wins Oscar for Best Supporting Actress

At the 96th Academy Awards Sunday night, Da'Vine Joy Randolph took home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, capping off an impressive and joyous Awards Season run for her performance as Mary Lamb in Alexander Payne's The Holdovers (now streaming on Peacock!), which had already seen her earn many of the industry's top prizes.

In The Holdovers, Randolph plays Mary, a cook at the prestigious boys' school where the film takes place, whose kindness and intelligence helps to win over a teacher (Paul Giamatti) and a student (Dominic Sessa) fighting their way through holiday break. Though the film heavily features Giamatti and Sessa's performances, Randolph's warmth and emotional vulnerability shine through, giving her a spotlight throughout the story that's earned her the best reviews of her career.

Randolph was understandably emotional as she took the stage at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, saying: "God is good ... For so long, I've always wanted to be different and now I realize I just need to be myself and I thank you for seeing me ... I pray to God that I get to do this more than once. I thank you for seeing me. Have a blessed night. Thank you so much."

The Holdovers is up for for five Academy Awards at the ceremony, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Giamiatti, but Randolph was always the favorite among her collaborators to take home the prized trophy. Over the last several months, she's earned numerous accolades for her work in the film, including honors from film critics associations all over the country, and plenty of statues for her ever-expanding trophy case. 

In addition to tonight's Oscar, Randolph now has a Golden Globe Award, a BAFTA Award, a Critics Choice Award, a Film Independent Spirit Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award, and more, all for her Holdovers performance. And to make things more impressive, she beat out a field that included Oppenheimer's Emily Blunt, The Color Purple's Danielle Brooks, Barbie's America Ferrera, and Nyad's Jodie Foster.
