How Barry Brewer's Stand-Up Act About White and Black Churches Delighted AGT Fans
He was totally committed to the bit!
America's Got Talent has seen a slew of impressive comedians throughout its run, and there was one recent Act in Season 18 that had a super funny and memorable routine.
Although comedian Barry Brewer came onstage with crutches, he wasn't going to let the setback bring him down or hinder his performance. Brewer also added a special twis: He told his jokes while showing off his piano skills to accompany his commentary.
He first started off by telling a hilarious story of him boarding a plane while in crutches. Then, he launched into a bit about his experience playing instruments for churches at a young age. He explained the difference between Black and white churches, saying that white churches have a more "simple" approach to their passages and music while doing his best genuine impression of a pastor.
He then began to explain his experience in Black churches. "When they preach, it's serious," he said as the piano music picked up in intensity. "Its like: put your hands together for Jesus! He's been too good!" Brewer then began to sing his own interpretation of a preacher singing gospel music while the crowd cracked up.
Then, he wrapped things up with the perfect punchline. "And the white people be like: their Jesus is angry! Jesus has been through a lot."
Who is Barry Brewer?
Originally from Chicago, Brewer is a musician turned standup comedian. He got his start playing stand-up gigs in The Windy City before moving to Los Angeles to pursue a career in entertainment full time. He also has a slew of impressive acting gigs under his belt, as he has played the role John in the Tyler Perry produced show Bruh, Eric in the sports drama Games People Play, and Tyrese in the comedy series The Perfect Plan. He also is present on social media, with over 100,000 followers on his official Instagram page.
What happened to Barry Brewer's leg?
When Brewer came on the stage in crutches, Judge Sofia Vergara asked about the situation.
"I'm hanging in there, literally," he joked. "I was playing basketball and I tore my Achilles," he explained his injury. But being the trooper he is, he trekked on. "I didn't want to miss this opportunity to perform for you guys."
"I was gonna do stand-up comedy, but I'm gonna sit down today," he then quipped.
"Break a leg," Judge Howie Mandel cleverly commented before Brewer's audition.
